Application updatesThe target for our entering 2023 first-year class is 8,000–8,250, which is slightly larger than the class we enrolled in autumn 2022.
Our applicant pool size has grown again and therefore, our admission offers reflect the university’s goal to meet this class size while finding the correct balance between residency limits and other university goals, including diversity and inclusion.
You can log into the Ohio State counselor portal to view the decisions for your applicants.
Columbus campus applicantsWe received a record 76,710 first-year applications, a 7.6% increase (or 5,392 more applications) over our record in autumn 2022.
To provide additional context, for autumn 2019, we received a total of 52,018 applications, reflecting a 47% increase between autumn 2019 and autumn 2023. Our completion rate of applications was strong, with 90% of our applicants submitting a completed application.
Of our completed applicants, 40.9% asked that their test scores be considered, and 59.1% asked that their scores not be considered. These percentages varied widely between Ohio residents, domestic non-residents and international students.
Columbus campus early action admits
-
On January 20, we released admission decisions for our early action applicants. We admitted approximately 4,300 more students compared with this time last year — a reflection of the slightly larger class goal and the academic strength of the early action applicants.
-
71% of our admits ranked in the top 10% of their class; 98% are in the top 25% of the class
-
51% of our admits were test considered, compared with 49% of admits who were test not considered. A higher percentage of Ohio residents were test considered (58.8%) compared with our domestic non-residents (52.9%) and our international students (30.4%). For admits who submitted test scores, the average ACT is 29.9 while the average SAT is 1396.
-
We have admitted students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Top states other than Ohio include: Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California, followed by Maryland, Michigan, Florida, Texas and Virginia.
-
We’ve admitted students from all 88 counties in Ohio. The top five counties represented are Franklin, Cuyahoga, Hamilton, Delaware and Warren.
-
Nearly 19% of our admits are international.
-
14% of our admits are historically underrepresented students of color.
-
18% of our admits are first-generation.
Regular decision summary updateOur decision release on February 17 was intentionally small, in order to review all remaining applications together in March. In addition to admitting or denying applicants in March, we also will notify any student who would be placed on a wait list. On March 24, the remaining admissions decisions will be shared for regular decision applicants and for students who were deferred from early action.
To provide a pathway for all Ohio residents to access an Ohio State education, Ohio applicants who were not offered admission to the Columbus campus are automatically offered admission to a regional campus. This year, we offered 9,585 Ohio residents admission to one of our regional campuses. |
Buckeye Student Leadership Academy updateHigh school juniors who will graduate in 2024 can still apply to be considered for the next Buckeye Student Leadership Academy (BSLA) cohort.
BSLA is a special program for high-achieving rising seniors from Ohio high schools who are first-generation, rural or underrepresented minority students. Students apply for the program during their junior year. The program gives participants the opportunity to learn more about themselves and others, and how to make the college experience work for them.
The deadline to apply has been extended to Monday, March 20. |
