December decision release summaryOn December 9, we released the first round of admission decisions for early action applicants (those students who met our November 1 early action completion deadline). Here are few highlights of this remarkable group.
Of the 19,755 new first-year students offered admission to the Columbus campus on December 9:
-
39% are Ohio residents; 54% are domestic non-residents; 7% are international
-
17% are underrepresented minorities
-
19% are low-income or first-generation
-
99% are ranked in the top 25% of their high school class
-
83% are ranked in the top 10% of their high school class
In this decision release, approximately 5,000 more students were offered admission to the Columbus campus compared to last December.
We were able to extend more offers because more students applied and completed their applications earlier this fall, so our evaluation and review teams were able to complete reviews earlier. This is great news — it allows many students to hear back from Ohio State more than a month earlier!
Our remaining early action applicants were notified of our decisions on January 20. Regular decision applicants will hear from us on February 17 or March 24. |
Test-optional statusSince autumn 2021, Ohio State has been test-optional — allowing applicants to decide whether they want test scores (ACT/SAT) to be considered in their admission decision.
We're in the process of reviewing the performance of students who have enrolled without having test scores considered to help inform our policy moving forward. We'll send a separate email once we have an updated policy for autumn 2024 applicants and beyond. |
Visits and eventsWe have a wide variety of opportunities for our admitted students to visit campus and engage with the university — both virtually and in person. Encourage your students and their families to explore our admitted student resources and campus visit options.
We also invite sophomores and juniors to learn more about Ohio State at our in-person admission overviews and tours — as well as our virtual programs. |
School counselor portalDo you use our school counselor portal? If you do and you've forgotten your password, you can click the "forgot password" link when attempting to log in. Then, you'll be prompted to answer your security questions.
If you can't remember your security question answers, contact Ohio State IT to request a password reset at 614-688-HELP (4357). Press one for password assistance and then press one again to speak to a technician.
Our school counselor portal remains one of the best ways to receive updates on applicants from your school throughout the entire season. |
Financial aid updatesIt's time for students to apply for financial aid for the 2023-24 school year!
Students can start by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. But they shouldn't stop there! They can create a profile on our scholarship-matching tool, ScholarshipUniverse, to discover even more aid opportunities.
Ohio State's priority date for both is February 1. (Note: Students can still complete the FAFSA and ScholarshipUniverse profile after February 1; however, we cannot guarantee maximum aid after this date.)
We'll send official financial aid notifications in late February to students' BuckeyeMail accounts.

Buckeye Precollege Summer InstitutesLaunching in summer 2023, the Buckeye Precollege Summer Institutes is a two-week, residential enrichment program for academically ambitious and intellectually curious high school students in grades 9 to 11 who will be at least 15 by the start of the program.
Students are enrolled in a single intensive course, designed especially for precollege students, and taught by Ohio State faculty and staff. Students get a deep dive into a particular subject not typically taught at the high school level — allowing them to explore college majors and potential careers.
Application deadlines are February 1 (early round) and March 1 (regular round), 2023. Please email precollege@osu.edu with any questions.

Academic program updates
Pilot program for students interested in studying agriculture and food sciencesIn partnership with our College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), we're developing a program to support the admission and enrollment of students who have been actively involved in agricultural or food sciences activities during high school and are planning to continue that work in college.
Ohio State offers an array of programs where students can study traditional agricultural programs, such as agribusiness, culinary science, sustainable plant systems, and food sciences and engineering.
The pilot for students interested in attending the Columbus campus includes:
-
Additional consideration in the application review for students actively involved in 4-H, FFA and other agricultural activities
-
Earlier notification for admission in our decision releases
-
Earlier notification of merit scholarships (university and college-based scholarships) and financial aid (requires students to complete the FAFSA for need-based aid and the college scholarship application)
Please note: Starting or completing a degree at the Wooster campus remains a valuable option for Ohio students who would like to start their Ohio State education at a smaller location or who would be better served by its array of academic options.
CFAES offers significant scholarship funds for students interested in these agricultural programs, especially students who live in a number of more rural counties in Ohio. For more information, feel free to contact Jill Hampshire, director of recruitment and enrollment for CFAES.
College of Education and Human Ecology: Getting teachers into classrooms and keeping them thereAs warnings of catastrophic teacher shortages began making headlines in autumn 2021, all eyes were on teachers like Mary Hippler.
The 2020 graduate from the College of Education and Human Ecology spent her first year of professional teaching maneuvering the chaos of a pandemic and conducting hybrid classes in two-day splits with her fifth-grade students. The next year brought new challenges. Students were behind academically and struggled to focus. Behavioral problems disrupted learning. Learn more about the issue and steps the college is taking to address it.
Save the date: Democracy Camp 2023The John Glenn College of Public Affairs will offer its annual Democracy Camp for rising high school juniors and seniors on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

The application will go live in February. Please contact Chris Adams with any questions.
John Glenn College of Public Affairs high school internship program (HSIP)The HSIP program is looking forward to creating meaningful public service internship experiences for your students in 2023. Our students get to work in a wide variety of settings while earning college credit, including:

If any of your school's seniors are interested in a similar internship experience for summer (deadline: January 31), fall (deadline: April 15) or spring (deadline: September 30), encourage them to explore the HSIP website or to contact the HSIP team. Students can also reach out to an HSIP alum — our new HSIP coordinator, Jim Ellison — to learn more about the program.

Regional campus updatesThe Buckeye Opportunity Program is one of Ohio State's signature affordability programs. Launched in 2019, the program ensures that all eligible Ohio resident students on all campuses who qualify for a federal Pell Grant receive enough financial aid to cover the full cost of undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees.
"Tuition and mandatory fees are covered at any Ohio State campus for Pell Grant recipients who submit their FAFSA by February 1. We want to remind our Ohio residents that they have a guaranteed pathway to an Ohio State education through our network of campuses, including Columbus, Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark and ATI/Wooster," said James Orr, vice provost for strategic enrollment management.
During the 2021-22 academic year, 9,400 students across all the university's campuses were part of the Buckeye Opportunity Program.
